The Castro Theatre in San Francisco is a pretty nifty place, and I’d recommend checking it out if you ever find yourself in San Francisco with some free time on your hands. It’s worth a visit simply to see the great organist that plays before many of the showings.
The theatre plays some pretty cool films – some you may never have heard of, but others are well known. The theatre often organizes shows along a particular theme. They’ve got a schedule of events online.
You’ll find a couple of links to the theatre's site below. The first link is to the theatre’s current programming list, and the second link takes you to a listing of the theatre’s upcoming schedule. Of particular note: some great film noir, an upcoming spate of Coen Brothers films, The SF Indiefest, a UA retrospective, Last Year at Marienbad (a strange but excellent film by Alain Resnais that should never be watched while sleepy), Blade Runner, and a showing of Young Frankenstein.
