Addendum to The Epic Film, Part 1

This is a brief follow up to my previous blog about David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia. My blog provides such a glancing look at this complex film that I thought that I should perhaps include a couple of links to reviews and articles that discuss the film in some greater capacity.

The first link will take you to a general overview of the film on the Turner Classic Movies website. The second, third, and fourth links all take you to reviews of the film. You will find some small discussion of the film’s accuracy (or inaccuracy – essentially, don’t base everything you know about Lawrence on the film). The Ebert review, done for his ‘Great Films’ series of articles, does make mention of the film’s oblique treatment of Lawrence’s sexuality, an interesting subject that has sparked discussion in other journals and publications through the years - publications better equipped to discuss the matter than I.

1. TCM Overview

2. Roger Ebert Review

3. British Film Institute (BFI) Review

4. BBC Online Review

And finally, to once again plug Cineaste Magazine: if you have access to a library that carries Cineaste, and if you are really interested in the subject at hand, then there are back issues that contain articles dealing with the film. One of the more interesting articles concerns one of the screenwriters, who had been blacklisted and was denied credit for his efforts. You'll find this article in Volume 20, Issue 4.
